Under Section 36 of the Education Act parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they receive full time education whether by regular school attendance or otherwise. Parents are thus primarily responsible for ensuring that children attend, and stay at, school.

Parental responsibility extends beyond securing regular school attendance. Parents should ensure that their children arrive in school on time and properly attired.

It is parents responsibility to inform the school of the reason for a child's absence as soon as possible. Parents should telephone the school on the first morning and follow this up with a note of explanation when the children returns to school.

Under Regulation 8 of The Education (Pupil Registration) Regulations 1995 there is a discretionary power for leave to be granted for the purpose of an annual family holiday or an annual holiday during term time. Only in exceptional circumstances may the amount of leave granted exceed (in total) more than two weeks in any year. No parent can demand leave of absence for the purposed of a holiday as of right.

Authorised Absences include:

  •    Illness
  •    Medical or Dental Appointments
  •    Family bereavement
  •    Days of Religious Observance
