The Walking Bus

We operate a popular Walking Bus Scheme here at our school. The Walking Bus is a scheme encouraging parent volunteers to walk children to school along set routes. The children walk in pairs and everyone wears a high visibility fluorescent tabard. With a ‘driver’ at the front and a ‘conductor’ at the back, the children are collected at ‘bus stops’ at agreed times along the route.

The Walking Bus is aimed at reducing congestion and improving mobility, access and therefore safety throughout the County. Since it's powered by good old-fashioned leg work it promotes healthy lifestyles and by encouraging walking it also increases awareness of the local environment, independence and social opportunities.

Risk assessments of the routes have been made, parent volunteers trained and fluorescent tabards purchased. Children may walk independently under the supervision of the driver and conductor or conversely if you wish to walk with your child and the bus you may do so.

We have 2 separate routes. Route 1 operates from Birchwood on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Route 2 from Park Meadow on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings whatever the weather. Joining information plus routes and times are available by clicking here.
