Exploring Geography at The Ryde School

EYFS

In Geography we explored and compared different climates – hot and cold.

Handa’s Surprise – hot climate

Lost and Found – cold climate

We explored on Google earth where the fruits came from during Handa’s surprise.

We explored simple maps and drew a map of our garden area.   We also looked at the map and talked about where the Picture News story came from each week.  These introduced conversations about the different places in the world our families come from.

Year 1

We attended a workshop about pollution and the impact it is having on our planet and the animals that live here with us.

In Year 1 we have used lots of different types of maps to learn about different places. We have also used new and old maps to compare London. In OAA week we made our own maps of the school grounds. We were able to add a 4 point compass using a real compass to guide us.

Year 2

In our class we have a world map on display. Every time we learn about a new place we find it on our map and add some our own facts.

In Year 2 we travelled to Rio de Janeiro! We learnt Portuguese from Mrs Weeks, we made carnival masks and listened to Brazilian music and we tasted some Brazilian fruits.

Year 3

In Year 3 we learnt about the water cycle and created our own mini system using soil, a jar, Clingfilm and soil. The water inside the evaporated to the top and then fell back down just like rain. We used shaving foam, water and food colouring to show the process of precipitation.

Year 4

In year 4 we invited our parents to help us with our map reading skills.  We learnt about scale and co-ordinates.

We have also learnt about volcanoes. We learnt where volcanoes are in the world, how they formed, how they erupt and the impact this has on the locality. We made our own volcano erupt.

Year 5

In Year 5 we have used Digimaps to locate different bodies of water. We could then find these on the globe. We carried out research on the different bodies of water and created our own information page

We have enhanced our map skills through orienteering practice and planning a route for a guided tour.

Year 6

In Year 6 we made biomes in a bag. The water in the biome evaporated, condensed and fell like rain would in a real biome. We revisited the biomes and monitored how the vegetation grew.
