Year 2 had a wonderful day at Lee Valley Education Centre. The leader at the centre, Kelly, tested the children’s knowledge on habitats. They all remembered what they had learned in science lessons and answered all her questions using scientific vocabulary. We then went to explore habitats in short grass, walled areas, gravel paths, trees and long grass. A wide selection of minibeasts were found and the children were very excited when a different creature was discovered. After lunch in the sunshine, the afternoon was spent looking for creatures living in the stream. The children took it in turns to ‘stream dip’ with a net to see what they could find. A collection of freshwater shrimp, little fish, water snails, tadpoles and leeches were among some of the many minibeasts found in the water habitat. On the way back to school several children commented “that was the best day ever” which sums up how everyone felt about the trip.
