Year 3 enjoyed their trip to the Henry Moore Foundation. They met the tour guide and she took them around the gardens showing them the Henry Moore sculptures. Many were large, smooth and had holes through them. This was so nature could be seen through the sculpture. Henry Moore’s sculptures were inspired by nature – bones, rocks, shells, people, internal and external. Later the children visited three of the sculptures to sketch them in different ways. They focussed on a small area of ‘Large Figure in a Shelter’ looking at small details, then sketched a whole sculpture ‘Large Reclining Figure’ and finally did a 5 minute, 3 minute and 1 minute sketch of ‘Large Upright Internal/External Form’ or the ‘Locking Piece’ sculpture. The children were inspired to make their own sculptures back at school.
Albert – I felt tiny when I saw the Large Upright Internal/External Form sculpture.
Runav – I liked seeing all the sheep and the lambs next to the reclining figure because it gave perspective.
Lena – I enjoyed it when we sketched the 5 minute sculpture because I could add more detail. The 1 minute sketch was too much of a rush!
