Visit by the “Hedgehog Lady”

Reception had a special visit from a local Hedgehog lady, called Pat. In literacy we are reading ‘The Prickly Hedgehog’ and the children have become hedgehog experts completing lots of research about them.  The children have learnt new vocabulary such as nocturnal and hibernate. They know that hedgehogs like to eat crunchy beetles and earth worms. Hedgehogs hibernate in winter months because it is cold and beetles and earth worms stop coming out, therefore they would have no food.

Pat bought in a hedgehog called Beech, he was two months old. He will not hibernate due to being so small and young. The children now know that when hedgehogs are born they are pink and smooth. It takes one to two hours for their spikes to come through. The children really enjoyed this visit and it has inspired some of the children to want to become vets and hedgehog experts.
