Properties of materials – Reversible changes investigation

In Science, Year 5 have been investigating reversible and irreversible changes.  Initially the children had to decide whether a mixture of muesli could be reversed or not.  Once the children decided it could, they manually sorted the constituent parts to show it was a reversible change.

The children were then tasked with setting up an investigation to separate a mixture of either flour and rice, or sand and salt. They discussed methods of sieving, filtering and evaporation and made predictions on which method they thought would show a reversible change.  After conducting their experiments, the children wrote conclusions on their findings.
