Year 5 Forest School Parent Activity

On 26th March parents joined the class for some activities linked to the Royal Forester Award the pupils have been working toward.

The pupils were to be park rangers for the session. We had three activities for everyone to take part in.

Firstly, planting a tree sapling to add to the hedgerow along the edge of the field.

Secondly, preparing the wild flower meadow area at the edge of the field, and then sowing wild flower seeds to provide a wide range of flowers for pollinators and to increase the biodiversity of the plants in the school grounds.

Finally, we had a problem solving activity – to estimate the ages of some of the mature trees in the wild area.  Using tape measures we measured from the base of the tree up to 1m from the ground, the girth of the tree was then measured in centimetres and the result divided by two. The answer then was an estimate of the age of the tree.
