Year 3’s Autumn Term Design and Technology unit has been about levers and linkages. Initially the children looked at pop-up books and the types of mechanisms that are used in them. They also looked at playground equipment, including see-saws, to see how they moved. Next we made a prototype of a ‘Waving Flags’ mechanism that used levers to work. It was quite tricky and we had to be careful to follow the instructions. We also had to take notice of when the split pin joined two levers together and when it needed to be attached to the backing card. Our parent activity involved making one of three levers and linkages designs. We had to use a ruler to measure in centimetres and cut carefully. We reviewed our finished pieces and said what we thought went well and what we would improve.
